Starting in 1990 and created by Dan Mangeot, Thunder Over Louisville is the kick off event for the Kentucky Derby Festival. This kickoff entails two weeks of celebrations, including chow wagons, parades, hot air balloon glimmers and races, a marathon, a steamboat race, concert series and much more, all leading into the most exciting 2 minutes in sports... The Kentucky Derby.
As some of you may know, KY weather can vary widely from day to day, especially during the spring months, and a lot of times it doesn't work out so well for Thunder spectators. However this year, you couldn't ask for a more beautiful day with the temperature reaching the low 80's. This year also marked the return of the legendary US Navy Blue Angles after not performing for a few years at the show.
So comes Saturday, April 12th, the family and I pack up our chairs, sun glasses, camera gear and head down to the riverfront belvedere. Having only shot it the previous year as serious photographer, I learned from my mistakes then and came to this year's event to capture some grand moments of the events. I left there not only in awe from one of the best air shows and largest fireworks display to date, but feel satisfied with what I captured. I even blew the dust of a technique I hadn't used in a couple years, zoom racking. Zoom racking is where you have your camera set up on a tripod for a long exposure, and while the shutter is open you are either zooming in or out, creating an effect similar to what you would see if you were on the Millennium Falcon is it entered warp speed. With my delight I'd like to share my images with you and hope it gives you at least a feel to what a lot of us in Louisville consider our own national holiday... The Kentucky Derby Festival. Focused.
